The best of the Alps – winter sports enthusiasts can enjoy a dream holiday amidst glaciers, mountains and lakes

408. In words: four hundred and eight. That’s how many kilometres of slopes draw winter sports enthusiasts to Zell am See-Kaprun, to the Schmittenhöhe or the Kitzsteinhorn – Salzburg’s only glacier ski area – or further afield to the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn. The Ski ALPIN CARD makes it all possible and offers endless freedom, made even more enjoyable by the many ski-in/ski-out options. Thanks to the glacier ski area, the winter season here begins as early as October and extends well into May. In Zell am See-Kaprun, it’s not just piste enthusiasts who are in for a treat, but also freeriders, freeskiers, ski tourers, winter hikers, cross-country skiers and all winter lovers. There’s plenty of variety and adventure on offer for families with children too!

Skiing fun between glacier slopes and lake views

With its extensive range of slopes and mountain huts, ski-in/ski-out access straight from the town centre, and panoramic views of Lake Zell and the Hohe Tauern mountains, the Schmittenhöhe is a real highlight. Five long valley runs, one of the longest fun slopes in the world, the black run with gradients of up to 70 per cent, and numerous winter hiking trails are just some of the many winter sports options on Zell’s local mountain. The Ski’n’Brunch events in January and February are a special experience, offering an exclusive early-morning trip to the Schmittenhöhe for skiing and breakfast.

The Kitzsteinhorn is Salzburg’s only glacier ski resort. Wide glacier slopes with top-quality snow up to over 3,000 metres above sea level, modern cable cars, designated freeride routes, world-class snow parks and marked ski touring routes are sure to set winter sports enthusiasts’ hearts racing – all easily accessible via ski-in/ski-out facilities. But non-skiers too can enjoy alpine diversity at this year-round destination at 3,029 metres above sea level: the TOP OF SALZBURG and National Park Gallery panoramic viewing platforms, Cinema 3000 and Salzburg’s highest restaurant make up the fascinating range of attractions at Gipfelwelt 3000. Further down towards the valley, the family-friendly Maiskogel mountain beckons with gentle, wide slopes leading right into the centre of Kaprun. Families with children really feel at home here.

Winter nature experiences for all active holidaymakers

As well as downhill skiing, Zell am See-Kaprun offers a wealth of winter outdoor activities: ski touring enthusiasts are drawn to the Ronachkopf mountain and the marked ascent routes on the Maiskogel and Kitzsteinhorn. For Nordic skiing, there are plenty of trails for both skate-style and classic cross-country skiers. The weekly programme guarantees variety for all ages and interests, such as guided snowshoe hikes, winter yoga, guided ski tours or introductory cross-country skiing courses. Highlights include the Kitzsteinhorn Explorer Tour, where a National Park ranger leads the way through four climate zones up to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, or the romantic torchlight hikes at dusk. With the TAUERN SPA Zell am See-Kaprun, the region boasts one of the most modern and largest wellness oases in the Alps. These experiences are easily accessible by public transport, and for our overnight guests, the Guest MobilityTicket covers all public transport throughout the province of Salzburg.
