Where does the après-ski genre come from?
Après-ski literally means “after skiing” in French, and it gradually developed in the Alpine regions as people would gather socially after a day on the slopes, usually in a mountain hut or bar, often with live music, beer, and a lively, upbeat atmosphere. It really took off in Austria, Switzerland, and southern Germany. In Austria especially, après-ski culture is still going strong today and has even become a key part of the whole winter sports experience.
What started as a relaxed get-together eventually evolved into a full-on party scene, where music played an increasingly important role. That shift ultimately led to the creation of the well-known après-ski music genre as we know it today.
