In December, South Limburg shows why it is the Christmas province of the Netherlands. There are Christmas markets in ancient caves, twinkling lights on the Vrijthof and a winter village in the middle of Heerlen.

From Alpine Hotel Landgraaf, all of it is within easy reach. You visit a Christmas market during the day and return in the evening to a warm hotel right next to the SnowWorld slopes.

Why choose Alpine Hotel Landgraaf as your base?

The hotel is centrally located between Heerlen and Kerkrade. Maastricht is about 15 kilometres away and Valkenburg about 19 kilometres. So you can stay somewhere peaceful, without the hassle and prices of a crowded city centre, and still be close to some of the most atmospheric Christmas markets in the Netherlands.

After a day of wandering, you can enjoy a fondue in the fondue restaurant, an Alpine dinner in Chalet 55º or a drink in the Bierstube.

Christmas markets you can’t miss

Kerststad Valkenburg (13 November 2026 – 3 January 2027)

Valkenburg is the Christmas market destination of the Netherlands. The town is transformed into a winter wonderland both below and above ground, with Christmas markets in the marl caves, plenty of lights, music and treats. There is plenty for children to do too, from a Ferris wheel to an ice rink.

Tip: book your tickets for the cave markets online in advance, and weekday evenings are much quieter than the weekend.

Magisch Maastricht (27 November – 27 December 2026)

On the Vrijthof you will find a Christmas market with atmospheric stalls, a covered ice rink, a 45-metre Ferris wheel and a curling rink. Entry is free. Combine it with an afternoon of shopping and dinner in the city centre, and you have a full day.

Wintertijd Heerlen (10 December 2026 – 3 January 2027)

Closer to the hotel you can visit Heerlen, where the city centre turns into a winter village with an ice rink, an ice slide and winter cafés. Ideal for families, and a nice way to end a day.
