Spine protector for winter sports

Nowadays, the ski helmet cannot be missed from the basic equipment of a winter sportsman. However, for a decade or so ago, nobody wore a ski helmet when going on winter sports. This might as well become the case with the back protector!

What is back protection for skiing or snowboarding?

Despite the fact that most winter sports injuries do not occur to the back, it is still important to give your back extra protection. As with the head, a wrong fall on your back can have a life-changing outcome.

A back protector is the ideal choice to keep your spine intact. It is recommended to wear it when you go skiing or snowboarding, as the protector can protect you from serious injuries. A good back protector ensures that your spine and part of your shoulders are protected in case of a fall or accident on the slopes.

A spine protector not only protects you from the risks you take yourself, but also offers you protection from the ignorance of other piste users. With an average speed of around 70 kilometres per hour, you can imagine what the impact of such a collision can mean for you. Similarly, many professional athletes already wear this type of protection.

Do I need a back protector?

That is entirely up to you. But even if you can ski or snowboard very well and are always careful, someone less careful can ski into you with dire consequences.

Buying a back protector, what to look out for?

In any case, it is important that the protector does not restrict your movements. In addition, you wear the back protector under your jacket, so also pay attention to how much heat the back protector gives off. Are you often cold when skiing? Then some extra warmth is no problem. But if you do get hot while skiing or snowboarding, it's better to choose an airy and breathable model.

At Duijvestein, we offer different models in back protection. Here, you can choose basic protectors that only protect the essential parts of your back, or longer models and jackets with an integrated back protector and various paddings.

Back protection for children

A back protector is essential for parents who want to protect their children during winter sports. It does not necessarily need to be a big investment, but it is important that it provides sufficient protection. It should also be comfortable, otherwise children will not want to wear it. Therefore, let your child try on the back protector without a jacket. Let your child sit on a bench or chair during the fitting, as this should fit perfectly. If this does not feel right, the protector is too big.

Wearing back protection always takes some getting used to in the beginning, so let your child keep it on for at least half an hour to get used to wearing this form of protection. Or let your child wear it at home while skateboarding, cycling or rollerblading. That way, your child gets used to the feeling of wearing the protector and it won't be completely new during winter sports.
